Create Your Future Career - Hallie Crawford
Create Your Future Career Discouraged with your job search? Try positive thinking. Norman Vincent Peale and Wayne Dyer are just two of the prominent people who advocate the power behind positive thinking. And just how does positive thinking relate to your job search? See yourself not as you are, but how you want to be. Visualize your bank account with the large pay check youâd like to have. Imagine yourself smiling and satisfied with your work. See yourself surrounded by competent coworkers. Get the idea? See the future as youâd like it to be and watch reality conform to it. You can even take this technique a step further using affirmations. Affirmations are declarations of how you want your life to be using the present tense and omitting the word, donât. For example: · I am happy and fulfilled in my work. · I make more money than even before. · My boss and coworkers appreciate me and my contributions. Write your own affirmations and read them at least three to five times a day. Another way to stay positive is to create a vision board or treasure map. Cut out pictures and words from magazines depicting the future you want and paste them on the inside of a manila folder. You can even print them from the Internet. Your pictures can include a scenic view from your office window, an organized desk, laughing coworkers, and money. Words you choose can include âfulfillment, satisfaction, enjoyment, appreciation, money, and fulfilled aspirations.â Get the âpicture?â Donât believe these technique works? Just ask your friends who use them to tell you their stories. Better yet, try them yourself and tell others your own stories. The bottom line is to focus on the way your want your life and career to be, believe your desires can become reality, think positively, read your affirmations and look at your treasure map daily, then enjoy the journey of walking into the future you create for yourself. 3 Questions to Ask When Replacing a Star Performer - Your Career IntelIts inevitable at some point, a star performer on your kollektiv will move on from their current role and you will be faced with the challenge of replacing them. In some cases, this employee may depart the company for a new opportunity elsewhere. In others, their stellar wertzuwachs earns them an internal promotion, shifting their role in the company. Either way, their departure can leave a leadership vacuum that impacts everything from deliverable deadlines to employee morale.Filling the gap left by a high performers departure is never easy. The tangible and intangible qualities that made one employee a star wont necessarily apply to the next hire, especially in the case of a promotion. Rather than trying to replace the performer with an identical new hire, we advise companies to take time to think critically about the position and how to better tailor the role to the companys current and future needs.Recently, my co-worker Cliff Nelson and I worked with a client in the restaurant industry who needed to replace a star performer due to an internal promotion. Initially, the client desired someone from their market segment. After assessing the clients needs, however, it became apparent that the client would benefit from having someone different. The client needed a thought leader who would challenge the status quo by leveraging a new perspective and different background to drive further success. These three questions helped us identify the ideal replacement candidate, and may be beneficial for your talent search, tooWhats our current market position? Start with a candid evaluation of industry challenges and opportunities. Is your company prepared to capitalize on new growth opportunities? Does an emerging competitor rumliche lage a market share threat? Has anyone in the industry learned from some of the changes were looking to implement? When we asked the client these questions, they identified potential vulnerabilities in their operations. While the current operational performance was solid, they felt higher performance levels were needed to protect their market advantage. What skills or experience does the company need?Next, consider the skills and expertise that are vital to addressing market opportunities and threats but are currently missing from your talent roster. Our client recognized that while the current team exceled, they needed someone with a strong, process-driven approach. Ideally this candidate would come from within the industry but outside the industry segment who could raise performance standards to the next level. This need shaped our candidate search. How will the new hire lead? In addition to bringing the right experience and perspective, any new hire must also be able to fill the leadership void left by your star performer. Chase After Your Goals, Seriously.
Chase After Your Goals, Seriously. Chase After Your Goals, Seriously. This is a guest post by Cristina Grimaldi for Student Stories.Theres a huge difference between saying you want to be successful, and actually taking the steps to make it happen.I learned that lesson when I completed my first internship during my sophomore year of college. It was then that it finally registered with me just how critical experience is, especially before you enter the scary place everyone calls the real world. When I did that first internship, I started to realize several things. I bedrngnisiced how many other people are also making steps towards their goals, the importance of experience on a rsum, and that most things will never just be handed to you. You can be the type of person that waits for an employer to contact you, which is unlikely, or you can be the person to go knocking on every door with no shame. If you see an internship opening, apply. If you get denied a position, apply to 15 more.Toward s the end of my sophomore year I applied for an internship that I thought I really wanted, but I ended up not getting it due to lack of experience. As soon as I got off the phone with the human resources manager who had told me they were giving the position to someone else, I got online and applied to every single internship that interested me.I was offered one that so far has given me the best knowledge about Public Relations, which also goes to show that if one door closes, a better one will open. But never give up when you are denied a position because ultimately, you will need the experience. The more quality work you have on your rsum, the more likely you will get hired right out of college.I am also really active on professional social media sites. I connect with and contact people who are in my field, and ask them for advice or even offer to be a helping hand on any projects or events. I find it crucial to utilize social media because it is a great way to network with people who you might need help from later down the road. You will be surprised as to how far making connections can get you.The last thing I want to mention is that there is always a way to be involved in work. Im going on a trip for six weeks at the end of the summer, but I still wanted to get a summer internship somehow. I contacted a woman that I met through a close friend, and she is the vice president of a firm in Philadelphia. I asked her if I could intern with her for two months instead of a whole summer, but with longer work days, and she said yes. So no matter what the situation is, there is always a way to get what you want as long as you are willing to put yourself out there. So at the risk of sounding completely clich, Im going to leave you with this go after your goals and dont ever let someone saying no stop you from moving forward.About the AuthorMy name is Cristina Grimaldi and Im a junior at Temple University. I was born in Naples, Italy and although I moved to America at a young age, Italy will always be in my heart. My family also has my heart. I have a strong desire to succeed and no matter what bumps may come my way, I will always push forward.

4 Creative Ways to Get Employers Attention
4 Creative Ways to Get Employers Attention4 Creative Ways to Get Employers AttentionGood news Youve probably heard by now that unemployment in the U.S. is at its lowest in seven years. Companies are actively hiring, and candidates are binnenseeking new jobs. If youre ready to start your job search, how can you stand out from everyone else who is taking advantage of the positive situation? Sure, you can update your rsum and LinkedIn profile, but youre probably wondering if theres mora to it than the now traditional methods. You may have read about tools to grab the attention of employers. Many recruiters and employers dismiss them as too extreme and still want to see a traditional rsum and cover letter. However, there are a few things you may consider adding to your job application that could leave a positive and distinct first impression.Write a Biography One of the key elements to getting past the interview stage is to show the company youre a good cultural fit. You dont have to s ave that show for the interview. You can demonstrate that to prospective employers by mirroring their own style when creating your applications. This is especially effective if youre applying to a more progressive company. For example, if staff bios on the companys site reflect the sense of humor of each employee or state their interests outside of work, you may want to create your own. Keep it short and in the same style as those you see on their site, and send it in with your regular application.Shoot a Video Recording and sending a two- to three-minute video to an employer can be effective if the company and type of job youre applying to warrants it. If the job is a client-facing or instructor role, such as a customer service representative, recruiter, sales associate or teacher, this can be a good representation for the employer of how you handle people and situations. Most importantly, the video needs to be short and targeted specifically to the company and what you know about it . A video of you sitting and talking to the camera will not be powerful, but short takes of you interacting with others will. Remember to show, not tell.Make a Presentation There are certain jobs for which a presentation is a more appropriate application piece than others. If youre applying to be a consultant, trainer or researcher, you may want to consider including a presentation as part of your application package. If youve been asked for a writing sample, you dont have to provide one youve already written. If you dont think that anything in your files accurately reflects the type of work youd be doing at the company, create something new. It should not be long, and as with any presentation, is should be eye-catching and understandable for the audience. If you are creating something new, consider using the companys colors as the template, as that will show extra attention to detail and catch the employers eye.Design an Infographic Rsum Infographic rsums have become popular lately. They are noticeable and often tell more of a story than a traditional rsum does. Most employers will still expect to see a polished, well-written rsum, so youre better off sending both if you want to send an infographic version. Be careful that your flashy versions graphics and representation carries purpose you dont want an employers staring at it trying to figure out who you are because theyre so distracted by the colors or odd graphics. Submitting something additional is probably a good idea only for the opportunities you are really serious about, as it can take a lot of your time. The bottom line is that if you choose to submit a non-traditional item with your application, make the best use of your and the employers time. How can you do this? Do your homework before you put it together. Read news about the company, peruse the website, study reviews of current and past employees and talk to anyone you know who worked or works there. Make sure the medium you choose is tailore d to the company and job as much as possible. This is your opportunity to let the employer interact with you and get a sense of your personality before inviting you for an interview. Make it count.Marcelle Yeageris the president ofCareer Valet, which delivers personalized career navigation services.
